NOSE, SINUS & ALLERGIES
Nasal symptoms such as nose bleeding, blocked nose and sinus congestion are common especially amongst children and younger adults. Many of these cases are likely related to allergic rhinitis (also known as sinus or sensitive nose) and effective treatment can administered to control the symptoms and improve the quality of life of these patients.
However, if the symptoms are severe, prolonged and/or persistent, it is important to have a thorough assessment (including a Nasoendoscopy) by an ENT specialist, as occasionally, these symptoms could be an indication of something more serious, like severe infection (such as sinusitis) or tumour growth.
EAR
In our hot & humid tropical climate, ear infections are not uncommon. This is particularly true if someone also has the habit of introducing foreign objects (like cotton buds) into their ear canals. Ear infections and ear wax problem can be effectively treated with proper cleaning of the ears under the microscope (ear toilet), coupled with the right medications (including the use of medicated ear drops) and patient’s education, to prevent recurrence.
Hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing sound in the ears) and giddiness are also common ear symptoms that we see on a regular basis. Getting a proper hearing assessment is the essential first step of the clinical evaluation. This will be followed by a thorough clinical examination to determine the cause of the symptoms before effective treatment can be prescribed to help our patients. Sometimes, patients with these symptoms may require a period of observation, treatment and evaluation before the exact cause can be determined.
THROAT & VOICE
Hoarseness of voice, pain or difficulty in swallowing and persistent throat discomfort/irritation are common problems that afflict our urban population due to our affluent lifestyle, stressful daily routine and rich diet.
Unfortunately, some serious throat conditions (like tumours and growth) can also present with similar symptoms, and it is important to be able to differentiate the mundane from the serious ailments. A thorough ENT assessment including a Nasoendoscopy will be an essential part of clinical evaluation to exclude potentially serious conditions.
SNORING & SLEEP APNOEA
Snoring can cause significant sleep disturbance to the partner and amongst other things, can lead to strained relationship and long term health issues. If the snoring is complicated by obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), the patient can (over time) develop serious medical complications including irregular heart rhythm, heart attack or even a stroke, if the OSA is left undiagnosed and untreated.
It is therefore very important to evaluate someone with significant snoring, as there are effective treatment options available in managing OSA to improve the quality of sleep and prevent adverse medical complications.
NECK LUMP & SWELLING
Swellings of the thyroid gland, salivary glands (usually the parotid or submandibular glands) or the lymph nodes can be a significant area of concern as they may be associated with tumour growth including malignant ones. Besides proper clinical examination, the evaluation of these neck lumps usually involved advanced imaging such as Ultrasonography, CT scans or MRI, and some form of tissue sampling such as needle biopsy.
Depending on the nature and the extent of the swelling or growth, our ENT specialist will discuss the treatment options with you and some patients may require surgery to remove their swelling.
